Cultural and Humanitarian Cooperation
The Embassy’s cultural program aims to promote cultural exchange between Ukrainians and Americans. In cooperation with cultural institutions in the Washington , DC and the Ukrainian-American community we host various events to showcase Ukraine ’s unique culture and traditions. The Embassy along with the Ukrainian Consulates in New York , Chicago and San-Francisco organize and support events featuring Ukrainian art throughout the United States .

In 2006, the first major exhibition of early 20 th century Ukrainian art in the USA “Crossroads: Modernism in Ukraine , 1910-1930” was held in Chicago in July-October. The exhibition included approximately 70 works by 20 artists and drew from National Art Museum of Ukraine, the Theatre Museum , and the Museum of Folk Art of Ukraine along with works from private collections. It will be on display in New York (the Ukrainian Institute on Fifth Avenue ) starting from November. The exhibitions of modern Ukrainian artists Sergiy Yakutovych and Anatily Tartakovsky were held in DC, New York and Chicago this year.

The Embassy also provides a platform for presentations of famous Ukrainians and Americans with Ukrainian background. Past events include the presentations of Filmotechnic Company (from Ukraine), an Oscar prize-winner of 2006 for its "Autorobot/Russian Arm Crane" camera; Shuttle STS-115 Mission crew with Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper, NASA astronaut of Ukrainian origin . Cmdr. Stefanyshyn-Piper, 43, is only the seventh woman to have walked in space.

In cooperation with The Embassy Series and Washington Group Cultural Fund we host concerts of Ukrainian artists and American performers featuring Ukrainian music. Past performances include concerts by famous Ukrainian folk singer Nina Matvienko, musicians Solomya Ivahiv and Roman Rabinovich.

In cooperation with the Smithsonian Institute, Washington Group Cultural Fund, think tanks based in DC and Ukrainian-American organizations we promote dialogue on political, judicial, humanitarian and culture through conferences, exhibitions, series of lectures, and book discussion. In 2006, the number of such events was organized in commemoration of the 20 th anniversary of the Chornobyl catastrophe . One of them, the international photo exhibition featuring works of known photographers, was held at the US Congress. The costumes, identical to those on the firefighters who liquidated the accident at the nuclear power station in 1986, were also on display on the Hill that day.
