On May 21, 2008, at the UN General Assembly plenary session, elections to the Human Rights Council were held. Ukraine was re-elected to this leading UN body having obtained great support of the member countries. Re-election of our state to the Human Rights Council is an evidence of worldwide recognition of adherence of Ukraine to protection of public liberties both in its own society and in the region of Central Eastern Europe. The delegation was headed by the First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mr. Volodymyr Khandogiy.
The delegations of the UN member states congratulated Ukraine on the victory and noted that for the relatively short period of time since resumption of independence, Ukraine has obtained noticeable results in protection of human rights and freedoms.
Approval was given to openness of our country to cooperation with the UN human rights machinery and the efforts of the Ukrainian government aimed at introduction of international standards of ensuring and protection of human rights and basic freedoms in the country. |
