11 March, 2008

On March 11, 2008 in the presence of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Volodymyr Ogryzko who paid a working visit to London a statement of the Parliament of Great Britain concerning Ukraine was made public.

The Parliament of Great Britain supports Ukraine’s aspirations as to the accession to the European Union and calls on quick negotiations on a new enhanced agreement between Ukraine and the EU, which should be based on principles of political association and economic integration.

In particular, the parliamentary statement pointed out a significant progress of Ukraine as to its democratic development, welcomes recent successful termination of negotiations on Ukraine’s joining the World Trade Organization, mentioned significant contribution of Ukraine in strengthening of security in the Euro-Atlantic region and the effectiveness of its active cooperation with the NATO. The parliamentarians expressed their belief in strengthening and shifting of Ukraine-NATO relations to a new level following the results of the Alliance Summit in Bucharest in April 2008. The deputies of the House of Commons called on the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to continue implementation of the programme of political, social-economic and legal reforms.

Dissemination of the parliamentary statement on Ukraine by representatives of three main British political forces – Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democratic Parties – can serve as a proof of wide inter-parties consensus in Great Britain regarding support of the prior tasks of Ukraine’s foreign policy and importance of deepening of bilateral Ukrainian-British relations.
