On July 24, 2008, the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Azerbaijan made a work visit to Sumgait where he met with the Mayor of this political unit and members of the Municipality.

In the course of the meeting, the Ukrainian – Azerbaijani relations were discussed. Relations between the sister cities Cherkasy and Sumgait were discussed in detail. The Sumgait City Mayor agreed with the proposal on expediency of the Ukrainian – Azerbaijani cooperation geography extension and supported the idea of availability of subscription of an agreement on the start of regional partnership between Odesa and Sumgait.

In addition, humanitarian cooperation was discussed and it was agreed to involve Sumgait in the actions aimed at popularization of the Ukrainian culture in the Republic of Azerbaijan, in particular performances of the Ukrainian artists devoted to celebration of the regular anniversary of Independence of Ukraine in the framework of the Days of Culture of Ukraine in the Republic of Azerbaijan in the first decade of September 2008.

The Ambassador of Ukraine examined the site allotted for future erection of a monument to the Ukrainian poetess Lesya Ukrayinka and discussed some issues of creation and erection of the monument.
