On February 1, 2006 in the framework of the official visit to Brussels Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Borys Tarasyuk met with representatives of the European Parliament political group “Union for Europe of the Nations”.
In the course of the conversation internal situation in Ukraine and the European Union, influence of internal transformations in the EU on implementation of European integration strategy of Ukraine, relations between Ukraine and the EU in the context of implementation of the Ukraine – EU Action Plan were discussed.
Representatives of the “Union for Europe of the Nations” emphasized increasing interest of the European community in Ukraine in particular in the context of democratic changes which took place last year. The political group demonstrated interest in expansion of its contacts with representatives of the Ukrainian political parties and blocs.
In particular in the course of the meeting the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the members of the European Parliament discussed the ways of strengthening energy security of Europe. According to the Minister, special importance belongs to diversification of sources and ways of supplies of energy carriers, elaboration of alternative sources of energy and energy-saving technologies.
Among the other issues which were raised by the deputies of “Union for Europe of the Nations” was the question on initiating the European Parliament resolution devoted to Holodomor in Ukraine.
The European Parliament member Marcin Libicki informed of the work conducted in the European Parliament regarding consideration and adoption of the Declaration on Recognition of Holodomor in Ukraine as an Act of Genocide. Mr Libicki underlined that it is proposed to recognize Holodomor one of the most awful crimes against mankind in XX century by the resolution. The European parliamentarian noted that this awful tragedy of the Ukrainian people has not been sufficiently known to present day and proposed to intensify scientific study of this issue in particular to consider assigning additional funds for the Holodomor history research.
Mr Tarasyuk thanked for the efforts made by the deputies for adoption of this resolution by the European Parliament. |
