Ukraine's Kolchuga Radar

The new generation long-range passive strategic electronic intelligence system Kolchuga serially produced by State-Owned Joint-Stock Holding Company (SOJSC) Topaz complies with the most stringent moral and ethical, humanitarian and environmental requirements and considerations and renders no hazard to people and environment.

Electronic intelligence system Kolchuga is a production implementation of research, engineering, and design solutions in the area of passive radio detection and ranging. This Ukrainian system is capable of detecting and recognizing practically any of today's known active electronic equipment, installed at ground, sea and airborne facilities and practically neutralizes the multi-billion investment having been and being made in development of stealth technology weapons.

The performance characteristics of this Ukrainian electronic intelligence system's most recent modification have really impressed the relevant specialists:

  • a system of 3 Kolchuga radars makes it possible to localize ground and above-water targets and their routes in a territory up to 600 km in depth (for airborne targets: in an altitude range of 10-800 km) and 1000 km laterally that makes it possible to implement, in particular, early warning of nation-wide air defence systems;
  • Kolchuga has 5 antenna systems (VHF, UHF, and SHF) providing 110-155 dB/W radio path sensitivity across all-round swath, depending on frequency;
  • parallel 36-channel detection receiver makes it possible to provide instant searches by frequency detection, analysis, and classification radio-frequency radiation sources at unlimited input flow rate throughout 130-18,000 MHz frequency band;
  • Kolchuga provides completely automated detection and recognition of radio-frequency radiation sources whereby powerful on-board computer provides analysis, numerical processing, and recognition of the detected targets by matching their parameters against its databank and displays the findings on a ground map-enabled monitor;
  • special preventing selectors make it possible to remove from the relevant processing up to 24 disturbing signals and tracking selectors allow synchronized isolating and tracing of signals from 32 targets;
  • Kolchuga requires only 1 operator to accomplish all core operation tasks (2 others comprise round-the-clock operation crew), who provides control interactively using a personal computer.

Ukrainian passive electronic intelligence system Kolchuga is unprecedented in the world in terms of overall operation and performance characteristics. On the other hand, by its core performance data, Kolchuga outperforms any known similar or analogous methods. Ukrainian Kolchuga is the only system to provide 800 km detection range of airborne targets. The nearest rival, US AWACS Airborne System provides only a 600 km range, ground systems Vera (Czech Republic) and Vega (Russia) provide 400 km, twice shorter, range compared Ukraine's Kolchuga.
