May 31, 2007. Greeting Remarks of Ihor Ostash Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada at the Presentation of the Project on the Taras Shevchenko Monument in Ottawa

Dear Friends and Distinguished Guests!

The presence of Shevchenko in the world reflects indeed the presence of Ukraine, Ukrainian spirit and Ukrainian ideas - since the word and image of our Kobzar, our bard, is an integral part of the life of every Ukrainian. In whatever corner of the world Ukrainians may live, for them Shevchenko is a part of their national consciousness, the life-giving spring of existence of the Ukrainian nation. And the Kobzar can be found in every home.

Shevchenko’s significance for Ukraine and for Ukrainians is universal and incalculable. Poet. Artist. Prophet-preacher. Shevchenko is sought in urgent moments of spiritual dialogue not by individuals, nor hundreds, thousands, or millions – but by our entire nation -- from the smallest of villages to the largest of cities. And this dialogue is uninterrupted.

I believe that, in a very short time, the newly erected monument of Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s Kobzar and Freedom Fighter, will stand tall overlooking the Rideau Canal. And thus, his presence will symbolize the eternal faith of all Ukrainians and every citizen of multicultural Canada in the ultimate victory of freedom. I anxiously await the day of the ceremonial unveiling, to join the people coming to Taras’s mound in Ottawa to pay homage and tribute to our revered poet who appealed: “Do not forget with softly spoken, kindly word - Remember also me”.

I extend to you my best wishes, good health, continued success in any new challenges and endeavors which you may undertake for the good of our Ukrainian community.

May the words of our great national poet Taras hail loudly: “Brothers, embrace! Your hopes possess, I beg you in all eagerness!” Unite! “To the Dead, the Living, and to Those Yet Unborn, My Countrymen!” Unite!
