On April 26, 2009 Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Jean-Daniel Lafond visited the Dzherelo Rehabilitation Centre for Children with Cerebral Palsy in Lviv. The Governor General received a warm welcome by kids attending the centre who suffer from cerebral palsy.
Her Excellency toured the centre, which was founded by Canadians and Ukrainians in 1993 to offer services to children with cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions living in the Lviv region.
Her Excellency and the delegates participated in a roundtable discussion on inclusive education with representatives of the Oblast (province) and the municipal council, members of Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities, the Dzherelo board of directors, and other non governmental organizations involved in the integration in society of children with disability. The Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities project is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency.
Before the discussion, Her Excellency said a few words to convey to participate how amazed she was to learn about the special service and the commitment and dedication of the staff at the Centre.
The Governor General participated in a discussion with representatives from non-governmental organizations to obtain an overview of the situation of women in Ukraine related to the challenges and opportunities they face in the political, economic and health spheres.
